Is there a HIFU trial in Singapore?

HIFU trial sessions are not offered at Dr Sin Yong's practice, because Singapore's medical ethics rules bar doctors from using free or discounted treatment as an inducement, and because a few lines over one zone cannot show what a planned treatment does. The first visit is a consultation: an examination, a decision on suitability and a written quote.

Key facts
Trial sessions
Not offered; free or discounted treatment as an inducement is barred by the SMC's ethical guidelines
Trial shot counts
Not offered; a shot is a unit of the device, not of treatment, and a count without depth and area is not comparable
Why a trial shows little
Collagen remodelling is gradual, so nothing meaningful is visible on the day; a partial treatment adds heat without a plan
First visit
History, examination at rest and in animation, palpation of tissue depth, a decision on suitability and a written quote
Consultation fee
The consultation is a medical visit with its own fee, stated when you book; it does not oblige you to proceed
Possible outcomes
HIFU, a different mechanism, a referral, waiting, or no treatment

Is there a HIFU trial at this practice?

No. HIFU at this practice begins with a consultation and examination, not with a trial session, a trial zone or a trial number of shots. The reason is partly regulatory: the Singapore Medical Council's Ethical Code and Ethical Guidelines bar doctors from offering financial inducements such as free or discounted treatment in their own advertising, and a trial priced to attract a booking is exactly that. The reason is also clinical, and the clinical reason would hold even if the rules did not.

A trial implies that a small sample of a treatment can tell you whether the full treatment is right for you. With focused ultrasound that is not how the information arrives. Whether HIFU suits a face is decided by examining the face, and whether it has worked is decided by reviewing it after collagen has had time to remodel. Neither is available on the day a trial would be delivered.

Why can a trial session not show what a planned HIFU treatment does?

A trial cannot show the result because HIFU works through collagen remodelling, which is gradual. Each focal heating point triggers a wound-healing response, and new collagen is laid down around it over the weeks and months that follow. Some people feel the skin tighten soon after treatment, but that early sensation is swelling and heat, not the remodelling itself, so a trial read on the day or the next week reports on the wrong thing.

A partial trial also changes the treatment. Lines placed over one zone, or on one side, add heat to tissue without the depth map a full plan is built from, and treating one side of a face to compare it with the other is a poor idea for a thermal treatment whose effects develop asymmetrically over months. A trial shot count fails for the same reason the HIFU shots article describes: a shot is a unit of the device, not of treatment, and a figure without the cartridge depth, the energy per line and the area covered cannot be compared with anything. Nor does a trial test the thing that matters most, which is whether your problem is laxity at all rather than volume loss or a full fat pad.

“The device is the instrument, not the treatment — two clinics with identical Ultraformers can deliver entirely different results, because the lift is in the mapping.”

What does the first visit involve instead?

The first visit is an assessment. Dr Sin Yong takes the history, including any filler, threads or implants in the face and neck and previous energy-device treatments, then examines the face at rest and in animation and palpates skin and fat thickness over each zone. That examination maps where the SMAS is lax against where volume is missing and where tissue is too thin for the deeper cartridge, which is the information a trial cannot produce.

You are then told what is driving the concern and what the options are, which may be HIFU on the Ultraformer MPT or Ultherapy Prime, a different mechanism such as the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift on monopolar radiofrequency, a referral, waiting, or no treatment. Photographs may be taken for your medical record, with consent, and used to compare like with like at review. The consultation process page sets out the sequence, including that you are not expected to decide on the day.

What about trial shot counts and first-timer HIFU offers advertised elsewhere?

Offers of a trial priced below a standard session are common in search results, and this page does not name or rank anyone. What it can do is give you the questions that make an offer legible. Which device is it, and is it registered with the Health Sciences Authority as a medical device, since non-medical units can carry the name HIFU? Which cartridge depths will be used, over which zones, and who decided that? Who holds the handpiece and adjusts the energy? What happens if the trial is followed by pressure to buy a package on the day?

The seven things to know before booking HIFU cover the same ground in more depth. A trial that answers those questions well is a consultation with a smaller treatment attached; one that cannot is a price with a device attached. Compare offers by what they contain rather than by the headline figure.

How is the fee quoted, and is the consultation itself charged?

Fees are quoted in writing after the examination, itemised by treatment, area and consumable, and never before. Singapore's rules restrict price advertising, so no figure appears on this site, and a figure given before anyone has examined your face would describe a plan that does not exist. What moves a HIFU fee is the area treated, the cartridge depths used, the number of lines the plan requires and whether HIFU is combined with radiofrequency or laser. The how we quote page explains what a written quote contains and why a lower number elsewhere may describe a different device, fewer lines or a different person performing the treatment.

The consultation is a medical visit and carries its own fee, which is stated when you book. It is not offset against a package, no package is sold on the day, and the quote stands so that you can take it home. The consultation can end with no treatment recommended, and that is a normal outcome, not a failed sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Treating one side adds heat without a full depth map, and because collagen remodelling develops gradually and unevenly, the two sides would not be comparable for months. Suitability is decided by examination, not by a split-face test.

A test patch answers a question about skin reaction, which is useful for lasers in pigment-prone skin. HIFU places heat beneath an intact surface, so a patch tells you little about tissue depth, nerve courses or whether your problem is laxity. The examination answers those instead.

Fewer lines mean less total heat, but the risks that matter, nerve irritation, fat loss over thin tissue and welts from poor coupling, come from where energy is placed, not how much. A trial delivered without palpation and a depth map carries those risks at any count.

A trial is a way of starting a relationship at a low price, and the device may be a non-medical unit or a session performed by a therapist. This page does not judge any clinic; it gives the questions to ask: which device, which depths, who performs it and what happens after.

A note of any filler, threads or implants in the face or neck and roughly when they were done, a list of previous energy-device treatments, your medicines and supplements, and photographs of your face from earlier years. If you have none of these, the assessment still proceeds.
